Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells designed to cover the front side of your teeth and enhance your natural smile. Veneers cover blemishes, such as cracks, gaps, stains, or misshapen teeth. They can also strengthen delicate teeth.

Although veneers can be made out of resin composite materials, porcelain is the most stain-resistant material. Porcelain also tends to match your natural enamel better. A member of the dental team will discuss your options and recommend the best type of veneers for your specific needs.

What should I expect if I decide to get veneers?

First, Dr. Gershfeld will shape your existing teeth to prepare them for the veneers by removing a tiny amount of enamel. After your teeth have been prepared, he will make a mold of your teeth and send it to the lab, where technicians will make your custom veneers. You’ll be given temporary veneers until your next appointment.

When you return to the office, Dr. Gershfeld will fit your veneers over your existing teeth one by one. First, Dr. Gershfeld will clean and prepare your teeth for the bonding process. Then he will apply a special cement, place the veneers, and shine a light that will cause the adhesive to bond securely to the porcelain. In a short amount of time, your veneers will be permanently in place, and you’ll have a new and improved smile.

Why should I get veneers?

Veneers improve crooked, broken, or misshapen teeth while maintaining the natural appearance of your teeth. Veneers also offer these advantages:

  • Resistant to stains
  • Well-tolerated by your gums
  • Can cover over darker teeth
  • Look great with no invasive dental work
  • Reinforce weak teeth
  • More cost-effective than other dental solutions like crowns
